Contingent Workers And Definitions Of “Employee” Under Federal Statutes

By all accounts, the use of contingent workers in the American economy has escalated dramatically in recent years in both scope and magnitude.Taking the example of temporary workers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics between 1982 to 1998 the number of temporary jobs increased by an astounding 577 percent, while overall employment grew only 47 percent. It is estimated that over 90 percent of U.S. companies now employ temporary workers. Moreover, the use of contingent workers cuts across all sectors of the American economy, ranging from low skilled jobs, such as cleaning homes, to high skilled jobs in computer programming and legal services.
