Bloomberg: Former Partner Sues BDO Fired After Leave for Son’s Stroke
Filippatos PLLC is representing Eleni Lagos in her lawsuit filed in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York against BDO USA, PC. Lagos claims her former employer discriminated and retaliated against her after she took medical leave to care for her son, who had suffered a brain stem stroke. Her lawsuit said the tax firm cut her pay by roughly $100,000 and fired her just before she was set to receive millions of dollars from an employee stock ownership plan transaction. Lagos is suing BDO and several employees of the company under various statutes, including the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, and New York state human rights laws.

Attorney Gerry “Parisis” Filippatos, founding partner of Filippatos, PLLC, was quoted in an article describing a debate about an employee’s rights when asked to work past posted hours. Newsweek published an article based on a social media post from a student working part-time who had picked up an extra shift. The student explained they had taken an extra shift at their part-time job at a bar to earn some extra money. The student stated that their manager asked why they had closed so early — the bar’s posted hours said the bar closed at 11 p.m., but the manager informed them in a text they were expected to stay open until 2 a.m. Attorney Filippatos explained that instances like these (changing hours unexpectedly) can tread into “legally questionable territory.”

Filippatos Represents Former Firefighters in Unpaid Overtime Claim
Filippatos PLLC is representing two former FDNY firefighters in their lawsuit against their former employees. William H. Payne and Brandon Keeney were required to work up to 30 hours a week unpaid at the department’s training academy. The pair also claim they were forced to do humiliating tasks. Attorney Tanvir H. Rahman is leading the men’s representation. He told the NY Post that no employer is immune from laws that protect workers from wage theft, not even the FDNY.
